Band Of The Month: Once Nothing
This is a new column I'm working on getting started, where each month I feature a band that I think is worth writing about and telling everyone to go check out their material. As a Pittsburgh native myself, and someone who thinks these guys are the greatest thing since pinch harmonics, this month, I've chosen Pittsburgh-natives, and the newest signees to Solid State Records, Once Nothing. Anyone who follows the bands I enjoy at all knows I've had my eye on these guys since I was still in highschool, and I've always had great things to say about them. Once Nothing play a style of metal that is down to earth enough that it sounds familiar and inviting, mean enough that it makes you want to kick a wall, twangy enough that it makes you want to have a beer, and talented enough that you can't stop hovering your finger over the repeat button. From the time that I first heard Once Nothing, I knew these guys were destined for greatness.
I mean...those who doubt the claim, find your time machines and listen to the band's 3 song EP, ...And The Blood Of The Wicked Shall Flow Like A River... and check out the song "How To Build A Sand Castle" and listen to the classic, "oh come on baby you know how i like it" to see that these dudes mean business. Following the independent release of two other recordings, "A Reckoning" and "Voice of the Paragon", Once Nothing finally caught the attention of CI Records. I suppose it's necessary here to mention that the EP "Voice of the Paragon" saw the introduction of one of the band's most successful songs, and a personal favorite of mine, "Waves". The catchy Southern riffs and the mosh call "Can I get a hallelujah" are both elements that contribute to the fan favorite, and certainly get floors moving at live shows. Following the release of 'Paragon', the band recorded and released the "Earthmover" EP, which featured some of the band's best recorded material t date. This EP caught the attention of music label Solid State Records, home to music giants like Underoath and Norma Jean. The band then entered the studo with Jamie King (Between The Buried And Me, Beloved, Glass Casket, etc) to record their first full length since "A Reckoning", and certainly the group's best realized collection of music, titled "First Came The Law". The months following the completion of the album have seen the release of several songs, none of which have disappointed me, at least, and I'm sure will be a hit with fans of bands like August Burns Red, Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, and just good heavy headbanging music in general. Everyone make sure you head out and give it a listen, it drops this Tuesday, January 15th. It, much like the band that recorded it, will be a massive success. Make sure you don't miss this train, it's only going to pick up speed.
